Press Release 5/11/2007 – Maxnet Upgrades UPS Capacity to 500kVA

Albany based Internet Data Centre provider Maximum Internet Ltd (Maxnet) dramatically increased its Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) capacity over the weekend.

The first of two new 500kVA UPS units was successfully implemented, more than doubling the company’s UPS capabilities for its hosted server clients. The data centre ran on its back-up generator power supply for 5hrs during the Saturday UPS transition to ensure continuity of supply while the UPS was upgraded.

The second 500kVA unit – due for implementation in 2008 - will boost total UPS capacity across its two independent A & B power supplies to more than 1 mVA of capacity.

Maxnet CEO Brett Herkt says the new equipment reflects the significant growth being experienced by the company in the server hosting market.

“It’s a substantial financial commitment to ensure we’re in the position to continue to provide data centre hosting for power-hungry blade-server, SAN and other high density server equipment.”

Maxnet provides one of the few data centres in NZ capable of hosting high density environments. Older-style data centres struggle to cope with the enormous power and cooling requirements of such environments.

Maxnet’s UPS upgrade comes hot-on-the-heels of the installation of a 100KW DX cooling unit. Another 100 KW unit is scheduled for installation before Christmas. A second 500kVA diesel generator for its “A” power supply and a replacement 250kVA for its “B” supply is scheduled for implementation next year to cope with the continued growth.

“We won’t be getting much change out of $600k-$700k by the time all the new equipment is installed,” says Mr Herkt.

Maxnet focuses on providing “Mission Critical Internet” services. It is one of a small number of NZ data centres with true “High Availability” capability provided by fully independent A & B power supplies into its facility, dual UPS and backup generators, and fully independent cooling systems that run off these independent power supplies.

It also has three upstream international bandwidth providers for redundancy purposes, and gig connectivity into the Auckland Peering Exchange (APE), Telecom and TelstraClear networks.
